Sam Martin, Ex-Slave, Is Dead
From Talladega Home.
Samuel Martin, aged ex-slave, who served with the union army in the War Between the States, died Tuesday afternoon at his home on North Street, west, after a few weeks illness.
Attention was called to his war service last Thanksgiving when he received a check for $10,179.60 from the U.S. Government to cover back pension due him since 1892. He had been honorably discharged from the union army in March, 1866.
The aged Negro had been in ill health since last March when he was stricken with paralysis. Until that time he was engaged as a public drayman. He has lived in Talladega since the war between the states.
